Global ripple effects

The EU9s law arrives as other powers refine their own approaches. In the United States, the White House issued an Executive Order in late 2023 aimed at steering development toward safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. Federal agencies are mapping sector-specific rules, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology promotes a voluntary AI Risk Management Framework.

The United Kingdom has opted for a pro-innovation strategy that uses existing regulators to oversee AI in their sectors, backed by a new AI Safety Institute. China has adopted measures on recommendation algorithms and generative AI, requiring security assessments and content moderation. The G7, meanwhile, launched the Hiroshima process and voluntary codes for advanced model developers.

This patchwork complicates compliance for global companies. Yet convergence is visible in core themes: transparency, safety testing, incident reporting, and provenance of synthetic media. Industry response and concerns
