Artificial intelligence is moving from the lab to daily life at full speed. Now, the rules are starting to catch up. For consumers, the rules aim to increase clarity and reduce harm. People should see clearer labels when content is AI-generated. More apps will include disclaimers and tools to correct errors. The road ahead: enforcement and gaps

The test now is enforcement. In Europe, the AI Office, national regulators, and notified bodies will share oversight. Fines for violations can be substantial. In the U.S., there is no single AI law, but agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission have signaled they will apply existing consumer protection and anti-discrimination laws to AI products. International coordination will matter: AI models, markets, and harms cross borders quickly.

Several gaps remain. Smaller companies worry about compliance costs and complex paperwork. Open-source developers seek clarity on what counts as a "general-purpose" model and how obligations apply across the supply chain. Creators want better tools to protect their work from being scraped without consent, and clearer rules on training data. Despite the challenges, the direction is set. Standards for safety testing, transparency, and accountability are moving from slide decks to statutes.
